Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) is a protein produced by the liver and yolk sac of a developing fetus. In adults, AFP levels are typically low, but elevated levels may indicate certain medical conditions, including liver disease, cancers, or fetal abnormalities during pregnancy.

Why is the AFP Test Done?

The AFP test is used for:

  1. Liver Disease and Cancer Detection

    • Helps diagnose and monitor liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma).
    • Can indicate other cancers, such as testicular or ovarian cancer.
    • Used to track liver disease progression in conditions like cirrhosis or hepatitis.
  2. Pregnancy Screening (Maternal Serum AFP Test)

    • Part of prenatal screening to detect neural tube defects (e.g., spina bifida) in a developing fetus.
    • Can help assess the risk of Down syndrome and other genetic disorders.

Test Procedure and Preparation

  • A blood sample is drawn from a vein in the arm.
  • Fasting is usually not required, but following your doctor’s instructions is recommended.
  • For pregnant women, the test is typically done between weeks 15-20 of pregnancy
