Why is the ALT Test Done?
The ALT test is primarily used to:
- Detect liver damage from conditions such as hepatitis, fatty liver disease, cirrhosis, or liver cancer.
- Monitor liver function in individuals taking medications that may affect the liver.
- Diagnose symptoms such as jaundice, abdominal pain, nausea, or fatigue, which could indicate liver disease.
- Assess overall liver health in routine medical checkups.
Test Procedure and Preparation
- A blood sample is taken from a vein in the arm.
- Fasting is usually not required, but avoiding alcohol and certain medications before the test may be recommended.
