Acid phosphatase (ACP) is an enzyme found in various tissues of the body, including the prostate, liver, spleen, red blood cells, and bones. The Acid Phosphatase test is used primarily to assess prostate function, bone diseases, and certain types of cancer.
Why is the Acid Phosphatase Test Done?
This test helps in diagnosing and monitoring conditions such as:
- Prostate cancer – Elevated ACP levels may indicate advanced prostate cancer that has spread beyond the prostate.
- Bone diseases – Used to detect Paget’s disease, osteoporosis, or bone metastases.
- Gaucher’s disease – A rare genetic disorder affecting fat metabolism.
- Liver disease – Liver damage or conditions like hepatitis can cause increased ACP levels.
- Blood disorders – Hemolytic anemia or certain blood cancers may affect ACP levels.
Test Procedure and Preparation
- A blood sample is taken from a vein in the arm.
- Fasting is usually not required, but patients may be asked to avoid certain medications.
- For prostate-related tests, avoiding sexual activity for 24-48 hours before the test may be recommended, as it can temporarily raise ACP levels.
