Sputum Analysis

The Sputum Analysis test at Pamel Laboratories is a diagnostic examination of mucus (phlegm) expelled from the lungs, used to evaluate the health of the lower respiratory tract. It helps detect infections, inflammation, and other lung conditions such as bronchitis, pneumonia, tuberculosis (TB), or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

This test involves microscopic examination and physical assessment of the sputum sample to identify white blood cells, bacteria, fungi, and abnormal cells.

What the Test Includes:

• Physical Examination:

  • Color, consistency, odor, and volume of the sputum

• Microscopy:

  • Detection of pus cells, epithelial cells, bacteria, fungi, and possibly acid-fast bacilli (AFB)

  • Identification of abnormal cells that may suggest malignancy or inflammation

• (Note: Culture and sensitivity testing can be added if infection is suspected — see Sputum M/C/S)

Purpose of the Test:

• Investigate persistent cough, mucus production, or chest pain

• Support diagnosis of lung infections, asthma, or chronic bronchitis

• Screen for pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) in suspected cases

• Detect inflammatory or cancerous cells in the respiratory tract

Sample Type: Deep cough sputum sample collected in a sterile container

• Best collected early in the morning before eating or drinking

Turnaround Time: Same day (within a few hours)

Preparation Instructions:

• Rinse mouth with clean water before sample collection

• Avoid saliva or nasal secretions in the sample
