Bilirubin Test (Total and Direct Bilirubin)

Original price was: ₦11,000.00.Current price is: ₦10,000.00.

The Bilirubin Test at Pamel Laboratories measures the levels of total and direct (conjugated) bilirubin in your blood. Bilirubin is a yellowish pigment formed during the natural breakdown of red blood cells. It is processed by the liver and excreted in bile. Abnormal bilirubin levels can indicate liver disease, bile duct obstruction, or hemolysis (excessive red blood cell breakdown).

This test is essential in evaluating jaundice, liver function, and various blood or bile disorders.

What the Test Measures:

  • Total Bilirubin: The sum of direct and indirect bilirubin

  • Direct (Conjugated) Bilirubin: Processed by the liver and excreted into bile

  • Helps assess liver processing and excretion function

Purpose of the Test:

  • Diagnose and monitor liver diseases (e.g., hepatitis, cirrhosis)

  • Investigate jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)

  • Evaluate bile duct obstruction or gallbladder disease

  • Monitor hemolytic anemia or newborn jaundice

  • Part of routine Liver Function Tests (LFTs)

Sample Type: Blood sample (serum)

Turnaround Time: Same day (within a few hours)

Important Notes:

  • Elevated total bilirubin may indicate liver or bile duct disease

  • High direct bilirubin suggests problems with bilirubin excretion (e.g., bile obstruction)

  • High indirect bilirubin may point to hemolytic anemia or Gilbert’s syndrome

  • Often interpreted alongside other liver enzymes like ALT, AST, ALP, and albumin
