The Luteinizing Hormone (LH) Test at Pamel Laboratories measures the level of LH, a hormone secreted by the pituitary gland that plays a central role in reproductive health. In women, LH triggers ovulation and stimulates the release of an egg from the ovary. In men, LH stimulates the production of testosterone by the testes.

This test is commonly used to evaluate fertility problems, menstrual irregularities, puberty disorders, and to help diagnose conditions affecting the pituitary gland, ovaries, or testes.

What the Test Measures:

  • The amount of LH hormone in the blood

  • Assesses ovarian function in women and testicular function in men

Purpose of the Test:

  • In women:

    • Determine the cause of irregular menstrual cycles or absent periods

    • Evaluate infertility or check for ovulation timing

    • Diagnose polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or pituitary disorders

    • Assess menopausal status

  • In men:

    • Investigate low testosterone levels, infertility, or delayed puberty

    • Detect testicular failure or under-functioning

  • In children:

    • Help diagnose early (precocious) or delayed puberty

Sample Type: Blood sample (serum)
Fasting Required: No
Best Time for Test (Women): Often done on day 2–3 of the menstrual cycle, or as advised by a doctor
Turnaround Time: 1–2 working days

Interpretation Guide:

  • High LH in women: May suggest ovulation, PCOS, or menopause

  • Low LH in women: Could indicate pituitary gland issues or hypothalamic dysfunction

  • High LH in men: May point to primary testicular failure

  • Low LH in men: May suggest hypogonadism or pituitary disorder

Often interpreted together with FSH, estradiol, or testosterone for a complete hormonal profile
