Acid Phosphatase Test (Total & Prostatic Acid Phosphatase – PAP)

The Acid Phosphatase Test at Pamel Laboratories measures the level of acid phosphatase enzyme in the blood, with a focus on the prostatic isoenzyme (PAP). Acid phosphatase is found in various tissues, but prostatic acid phosphatase is specifically associated with the prostate gland. Elevated levels may indicate prostate disease, including prostate cancer, prostatitis, or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

This test can be useful for evaluating prostate health and may also support the diagnosis of bone diseases or certain blood disorders when total acid phosphatase is analyzed.

What the Test Measures:

• Total Acid Phosphatase (from various tissues)

• Prostatic Acid Phosphatase (PAP): specific to the prostate

Purpose of the Test:

• Support diagnosis and monitoring of:

  • Prostate cancer

  • Benign prostatic conditions

  • Bone metastases from prostate cancer

  • Gaucher’s disease or multiple myeloma (when total acid phosphatase is elevated)

• Monitor prostate cancer recurrence or treatment effectiveness (historical use; now often replaced by PSA testing)
