The AST test measures the level of this enzyme in the blood and is primarily used to evaluate liver health and detect tissue damage in other organs.
Why is the AST Test Done?
The AST test is used to:
- Assess liver function and detect liver diseases such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, or fatty liver disease.
- Diagnose heart conditions, including heart attacks or muscle damage.
- Monitor liver injury caused by alcohol, medications, or toxins.
- Identify muscle disorders and other conditions affecting the kidneys or pancreas.
Test Procedure and Preparation
- A blood sample is drawn from a vein in the arm.
- Fasting is usually not required, but some medications or alcohol can affect results.
- The test is often done alongside Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT) for a more accurate liver function assessment.
