What the Test Measures:

• The amount of iron bound to transferrin (a protein that carries iron in the blood)

• Helps determine if your body has too little or too much iron

Purpose of the Test:

• Diagnose or monitor:

  • Iron deficiency anemia

  • Iron overload (hemochromatosis)

  • Chronic illness-related anemia

  • Malnutrition or malabsorption disorders

• Evaluate symptoms such as:

  • Fatigue or weakness

  • Pale skin

  • Dizziness or shortness of breath

  • Brittle nails or hair loss

Sample Type: Blood sample (serum)
Fasting Required: Yes (8–12 hours recommended)
Turnaround Time: Same day or within 24 hours

Interpretation Guide:

• Low serum iron: Suggests iron deficiency, chronic bleeding, or poor absorption

• High serum iron: May indicate iron overload, liver disease, or excessive supplementation

Should be interpreted along with Ferritin, TIBC, and transferrin saturation
