Tuberculosis (TB) Antibodies Test

The TB Antibodies Test at Pamel Laboratories is a serological test used to detect the presence of antibodies against Mycobacterium tuberculosis — the bacteria responsible for tuberculosis (TB). This test helps to screen individuals for previous or ongoing exposure to TB, particularly when other testing options like chest X-ray or sputum AFB are inconclusive or unavailable.

While antibody tests are not the primary diagnostic tool for active TB, they can support early detection in asymptomatic cases, latent TB, or immune-compromised individuals.

What the Test Detects:

• Presence of IgG/IgM antibodies specific to Mycobacterium tuberculosis

• Suggests current or past exposure to TB bacteria

Purpose of the Test:

• Screen for exposure to TB

• Aid in the evaluation of individuals with persistent cough, unexplained weight loss, or fever

• Support latent TB diagnosis (alongside other clinical tools)

• Helpful in contact tracing or outbreak investigations

• Monitor immunological response to TB infection

Important Notes:

• A positive antibody test does not confirm active TB and must be followed up with:

  • Sputum AFB test

  • Chest X-ray

  • GeneXpert (MTB/RIF)

  • Tuberculin skin test (TST) or IGRA

• A negative result does not fully rule out TB in early infection or immune-compromised individuals
